How does a burglar alarm work?

burglar alarm

Everyone knows what a burglar alarm is but few people understand how they work. It is easy to understand why this happens since there are so many different alarm systems on the market at the moment. The good news is that most of the burglar alarms that you might want to install will be based on some common principles. There are basically two things that need to be discussed: circuit alarms and motion sensors.

The Circuit Alarms

There are 2 types of circuit alarms: open circuit and closed circuit. Both of them are based on the exact same concept. When you have an electrical circuit running through a window or a door and that circuit will be disturbed, the alarm would go off. An open circuit will only have the circuit being completed when the window or door is open. In this case the alarm will be triggered as the circuit ends up closed. The problem in this case is that by simply cutting a few wires, the circuit will remain open and no alarm will start. A closed circuit will show the current being broken down in the event that the circuit becomes open. It can be said that the closed circuit burglar alarm is much more efficient and a lot harder to break.

The Motion Detectors (Sensors)

Motion detectors can be used in the event that the circuit fails to protect the home or when you need extra protection outside the home. If the criminal enters your home and bypasses the burglar alarm, the only way to be protected is to have motion sensors activated. They are going to detect movement when there is no chance that it should exist and this will eventually trigger the alarm. You can consider this as being a second line of defense. The problem is that anyone inside the home would also trigger the motion sensors. Because of this, the detectors are only actually recommended in areas where there are no people as soon as the alarm is activated. A very good example would be a store.

Besides the Alarm

Sometimes people think that the alarm is the only thing that is protecting a home. This is not always true. Most of the modern alarm systems can also communicate with the police or a security agency. As soon as the perimeter is breached, the proper contact numbers are contacted. This is important as it will allow a group of people to come and check everything and see what happened. Nobody would gain anything if the alarm is not heard or if you live in a location where you do not have neighbors close by.
